Each December, the Twin Tiers Honor Flight makes it their mission to remember our fallen veterans and on Saturday, December 15, 2018, the Twin Tiers Honor Flight will be laying wreaths on the graves of local veterans at the Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton through the Wreaths Across America program.

The story of Wreaths Across America goes back to 1992 when a man named Morrill Worcester found his wreath company with tons of extra wreaths as the holiday season was coming to a close. Unsure of what to do with the surplus, Worcester thought back to a trip he’d taken to Arlington National Cemetery as a young boy and the impact that trip had on his life. It was in that moment that Worcester knew just what to do with the extra wreaths- they would be laid on the graves of veterans, a nod to their service to our country. What started as a simple idea has grown into a national event involving wreath companies and volunteers from all around the country. Today, wreath laying events take place at cemeteries in all 50 states. This year, nearly 1.6 million wreaths will be laid on the graves of our treasured veterans, young and old.

The Twin Tiers Honor Flight is not only committed to honoring our local veterans, but also to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms, and how incredibly important it is to take time to honor those who sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms. Wreaths Across America is a wonderful way teach your children about honoring the memory of our brave men and women. As a matter of fact, when a (provided) wreath is laid on the grave of a veteran, you and your kids are encouraged to speak the name of the veteran aloud, thank them for their service, and take a moment to reflect on that person’s life.

If you would like to join the Twin Tiers Honor Flight in laying wreaths at the Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton on Saturday, December 15th, please make plans to gather in the Weis Market parking lot located at 1290 Upper Front Street in Binghamton near the old Staples store at 10:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., those who meet in the parking lot will caravan to the cemetery where additional information will be shared about this special wreath-laying event.
