Twenty-one people displaced by a series of fires in Tioga and Chenango counties were assisted by American Red Cross volunteers over the last few days.

Volunteers with the Southern Tier Chapter of the Red Cross were busy providing aid to three families in the aftermath of residential blazes on Saturday and Sunday.

The fires happened in Spencer, Norwich and South New Berlin.

The Red Cross helps to find temporary lodging for those forced from homes by fire. Vouchers are made available for food, clothing, shoes and other needed items.

Local Red Cross officials say the past week was very active for members of its Disaster Action Team. Volunteers responded to requests for assistance following five fires in a six-day period.
