Local leaders are encouraging residents to wear purple October 20 to “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and its hoped that the show of purple will help generate discussion and awareness.

Purple lights will be shining on several local buildings, including the Security Mutual Life Insurance Company, Binghamton University's Library Tower and the Double Tree by Hilton in Binghamton.

Similar observances are being held across New York State.

People impacted by domestic violence can get help at the RISE 24 hour confidential crisis line at (607) 754-4340, the Crime Victims Assistance Center crisis line at (607) 722-4256 or the state-wide Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault 24 hour Hotline at 1-800-942-6906.

Meanwhile Binghamton University students this week have been packing care bags for domestic violence victims under the SUNY’s Got Your Back initiative.  The bags contain essentials like toiletries for people who have to get out of a dangerous situation quickly.
