A consultant on adolescent chemical dependency addiction will speak about heroin and prescription opioid abuse at a program in Binghamton.

Michael Nerney plans to discuss the science of addiction and the brain during a presentation at the Broome County Public Library on Court Street. The program is scheduled for December 14 at 6 p.m.

Nerney is a former director of the Training Institute on Narcotic and Drug Research. He has nearly four decades experience in the field of substance abuse and prevention.

Richard Southwick, an assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, is scheduled to open the program.

The presentation is being sponsored by the Broome Opioid Abuse Council, Binghamton Police Department, the Broome County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Attorney's Office.
