At the request of the family, a brief, private memorial is planned March 31 to remember Johnson City Police Officer David D.W. Smith on the second anniversary of his death.

Smith was gunned down on Harrison Street at a medical office as he responded to a report of a disturbance. The Chenango County gunman, who was employed at the office, was shot and fatally wounded by a second police officer.

Investigators have never said what caused the man to exhibit bizarre behavior after coming to work that morning before he rushed Officer Smith, took his service revolver and shot him.

Smith’s squad car will be parked in front of the medical center in his memory March 31.
