Paper Cuts: "Press & Sun-Bulletin" to Eliminate More Print Issues

The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin has announced it will drop several print editions in coming weeks.

The Gannett newspaper has advised subscribers that it will not print issues on December 24 and 25, as well as on December 31 and January 1.

In an unsigned email sent on Tuesday, customers were informed that a single "holiday" edition would be published before the suspension of print issues for the Christmas and New Year's weekends. Subscribers will be billed for three editions for what is described as one "expanded edition."

The Press & Sun-Bulletin has not indicated whether additional print edition cutbacks will be made in 2022.

Gannett newspapers across the country instituted the holiday "no print policy" on Labor Day as the company moved to cut costs with newspaper circulation numbers continuing to plummet.

Gannett has continued to reduce staffing and eliminated actual newsrooms at many of its locations. The company has moved to a regionalized reporting model with stories written for use at multiple newspapers.

In recent years, print circulation figures for Gannett newspapers have fallen dramatically.

According to published circulation statements, total paid distribution for the Press & Sun-Bulletin was about 51,000 in 2011. In the latest report, that number had fallen below 15,000.

Gannett closed its 12-year-old Johnson City printing plant in 2018. The Binghamton paper now is printed in the town of Greece, outside Rochester.
