Powerful Storms Race Through Region

Strong thunderstorms ripped through parts of the Twin Tiers late Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Some of the storms brought heavy rain, golf ball-size hail and brilliant lightning to sections of Broome and Tioga counties.

Thousands of NYSEG customers lost power as wires were torn down during the storms.

The hardest hit areas including south Vestal, Apalachin and Candor.

Dozens of trees were blown down, blocking some streets and heavily-traveled roadways.

At one point late Thursday afternoon, many motorists pulled over to the shoulder of Route 17 in Vestal because of the torrential rain, gusty winds and hail.
