New York State Electric and Gas is “assessing” when power might be on to thousands of customers across the state who lost service due to strong winds April 4.

In the Southern Tier, close to 2,700 customers in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware and Tioga Counties were without power overnight. Power was reported out early April 5 to 117 customers in Oneida County, 248 in Onondaga County and 495 in Otsego County  The hardest hit areas were in western New York where the already strong winds from a cold front were augmented by the winds off the Great Lakes.

Early in the morning, NYSEG reported 14,258 customers in Erie County without power.  In the Finger Lakes Region and Western Southern Tier, Steuben County had over 1,600 customers without power.  In all those cases, the utility’s website said only that it was “assessing” when power would be restored.

Winds brought down trees all around the region including on Arthur Avenue on Binghamton’s West Side where a tree pulled down electric lines.  Trees also were reported toppled in the early afternoon on Macon Street just off Conklin Avenue, Old Route 17 near Deer Lake Road in the Town of Windsor and at a residence on Sherry Lipe Road in Newark Valley.  A roof at Lockheed Martin in Owego was reported damaged by the wind and motorists through the afternoon had to deal with garbage cans and debris blowing across the roads in addition to some reduced visibility in blowing snow squalls.  There have been no reports of injuries.

At one point, the National Weather Service in Binghamton reported wind gusts in the afternoon as high as 60 miles an hour.
