A monument honoring Port Dickinson Police Officer Aldo Rossi Jr. will be dedicated on the tenth anniversary of his death in the line of duty.

The 42-year-old Rossi died on July 27, 2008, after an early-morning crash involving a drunk driver. Rossi had been directing traffic on Route 7 while waiting for a crew to remove a tree that had fallen across the roadway.

The memorial monument dedication ceremony at the Port Dickinson Village Hall on Chenango Street is to be held at 11 a.m. Friday.

Kathi Bailey organized the effort to raise money and design the monument. A decade after Rossi's death, Bailey said she felt it was important to have a monument to honor the officer at the village police station.

In recent months, dozens of people donated more than $3,400 to the monument fund. Others donated materials for the project.

30-year-old Patrick Fitzgerald of the town of Fenton was the driver in the crash that resulted in the police officer's death. His blood alcohol content had been measured at 0.37 percent - more than four times the legal limit.

Fitzgerald was sentenced to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated criminally negligent homicide and aggravated DWI in January 2010.

State records show he was released from an Erie County prison in October 2013.
