The Twin Tiers are under a Wind Chill Advisory until 11 a.m. with temperature feeling like between ten and 20 below zero through midday.  To the east, Delaware and Otsego Counties are under a Wind Chill Warning until 11 a.m. with temperature feeling like 15 to 25 degrees below zero.

The Broome County Transit system today is again offering free access to buses for people who can’t afford the fare either for transportation to a warm location or just for a place to get out of the cold.  Several people reportedly took BC Transit up on the offer yesterday, prompting County Executive Jason Garnar to extend the invitation for another day.

Meanwhile, the cold weather is blamed for a strange light-show in part of Johnson City last night.  A transformer fire in the area of Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue at around 8 p.m. cased the street lights along Riverside Drive to flash like the strobe lights at an over-sized disco.  Some described the effect as reminiscent of a scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind when the space ships fly over roadways.

Some 1,700 New York State Electric and Gas customers in Johnson City who were left in the cold for a couple hours when the power went out weren’t much amused.  Some residents said temperatures were in the fifties in their homes before NYSEG was able to restore power.

A video of the weird light show can be found on Fox40’s website.
