State police were called to a Chemung County mall Thursday to investigate a report of a man who may have been armed with a gun.

Authorities say troopers were sent to the Arnot Mall in the town of Big Flats around 10 a.m.

Investigators say police learned a man in the mall had been acting suspiciously and had an object that initially appeared to be a gun.

Police say the man fled on foot toward the neighboring Hampton Inn. He entered a room inside the hotel.

The man was found and taken into custody. He then was taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Elmira for a mental health evaluation.

State police say investigators determined that the man did not have a weapon.

Troopers were assisted at the mall by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, Horseheads Police, Elmira Heights Police and West Elmira Police.
