The work on developing plans for a .74 acre lot in Downtown Binghamton into a mixed use parking, residential and business site is kicking into high gear following the Southern Tier being awarded one of the three Upstate Revitalization Initiative grants from New York State.

The site at 7 Hawley Street is to be transformed from a surface parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy into a site for 350 parking spaces, 20 housing units and up to 10-square feet of commercial space by Newman Development Group.

During a news conference December 10, City officials said they were expecting discussion about building on the site to begin next week with the developer saying he’d like to see the project in the completion stage over the next 18 months.

The development is getting $3.45 million from the $500 million regional award from the state.  The total cost of the project is being put at about $20 million dollars.

Also at the news conference, Binghamton Mayor Richard David said plans are moving forward for demolition of the now-closed Collier Street parking garage.  Once that structure is down, there would be 75 to 90 available surface parking spots available at the site until plans can be finalized for developing that location.
