Dozens of people spoke at a Binghamton public hearing on a proposed gas pipeline that would run through Broome County.

A portion of the 124-mile Constitution Pipeline would be built in the town of Sanford.

The January 12 hearing at East Middle School was held by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Some of those who spoke against the planned project expressed environmental concerns. Many who expressed support for the pipeline said they believed it would have a positive impact on the region's economy.

Additional public hearings on the pipeline project had been scheduled in Oneonta and Cobleskill.

The DEC has announced a four-week extension of the agency's public comment period for the project. Written comments now will be accepted through February 27.
