Cortland County Sheriff’s officials are cautioning residents about some recent scam phone calls that have been identified as from a local number where the caller tells residents they have active warrants against them for failing to appear in Grand Jury.

The caller, claiming to be Deputy Mark Davis, says the victim needs to pay a monetary fee to have the warrant voided.

Similar scams have been reported by other law enforcement agencies around the region with other variation cropping up like one in the Broome County Clerk’s Office where the would-be victims had been told they had outstanding fees. Those calls also did not come from the agency the caller claimed to represent.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s office says Police agencies do not solicit funds to void or clear up arrest warrants and no one should provide personal information over the phone or by email.

In Cortland County, if you feel you are the victim of a phone scam or identity theft, you can call (607) 758-5599.
