PennDOT Plans Major Guiderail Overhaul
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has a long-term plan to upgrade guiderail and guiderail end treatments state-wide to make them safer.
PennDOT says the work will span 3 years and cover about 40,000 miles.
Officials say improved data collection will identify maintenance needs for guiderail and guiderail end treatments and provide assessments of when a guiderail has reached the end of its service life.
The work, which will start next year, will systemically upgrade and replace systems on the Interstates with end caps that meet new standards adopted this year by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials.
The estimated cost for the three year upgrade on Pennsylvania’s interstates is put at $45 million.
