Paving Begins At Binghamton Intersection Project
Paving work has started at a major Binghamton street reconstruction site.
Drivers have encountered detours and traffic delays at the intersection of Front and Clinton streets over the past four-and-a-half months.
Some motorists and residents have complained that the work has dragged on for so long.
The road surface is being lowered to provide increased clearance for trucks passing under the railroad bridges at the intersection.
Mayor Richard David acknowledged the project has inconvenienced people who are entering the city or traveling between downtown and the First Ward.
Speaking on WNBF's Binghamton Now program, David said the construction season is nearing an end, so the work at the busy intersection should be completed soon.
In response to a caller's question as to why work on such big projects can't be done at night, the mayor said overnight operations would be more costly. He said work is done during the daytime so the city is able to accomplish more street improvement projects with the limited money available.
