The investigation is underway into the cause of a fire in Chenango County March 11 that destroyed the mobile home of the former Smithville Fire Chief.

He called the fire in to authorities at around 12:15 a.m.

Officials say battling the blaze on State Route 41 in Smithville posed a challenge, in part, due to deep snow surrounding the structure.

The fire is believed to have started in a living room.

Firefighters from Smithville, Greene, Brisben, McDonough, Triangle and Willett spent over two hours on the scene.

There were no injuries.
