Workers have been busy at a park in western Broome County restoring a portion of the once-spectacular view of the Susquehanna River valley below.

Visitors to the Round Top Picnic Area in recent years have expressed disappointment that the vista many people had enjoyed for decades had gradually vanished.

The county took control of the park from the village of Endicott more than 30 years ago. Maintenance crews had routinely trimmed trees and brush as part of a vista maintenance program.

Park visitors say that work apparently was no longer being done. The view of Endicott, Vestal and the town of Union from the east side of the park had become obscured.

After the issue was discussed on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program in August, county officials indicated they would look into the complaints.

The county's website continues to tout "spectacular views looking to the east and west through the Susquehanna River Valley."

People at the park this week said they had been pleased to see some workers clearing some of the trees that had been blocking the vista.

State assemblywoman Donna Lupardo has been working with county representatives on a plan that could lead to the development of viewing areas and a walking trail in the Round Top park area.

Lupardo on Thursday said she's been looking for state funding that could make some park enhancements possible.

Some Endicott residents say they would like to see a trail linking the area east of Round Top with Grippen Park, which is located near the En-Joie golf course.
