New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says she couldn’t believe there weren’t already extensive code and training regulations in place regarding parking garages in the state.

The Endwell Democrat has written up legislation to require inspections for structural integrity every three to five years and to provide for more extensive training to code enforcement officers regarding parking garage safety.

This comes after the collapse of the parking garage at Wilson Hospital and the closing of the Collier Street ramp in Binghamton last year.

The collapse of the UHS ramp crushed several cars but no one was injured.  The Collier Street garage was closed in November after being deemed unsafe.

The current law requires enforcement officers to look for fire safety and maintenance issues every three years but there is no requirement for regular inspections by structural engineers.

An inspection training session is scheduled to take place January 21 in the Binghamton City Council Chambers.
