New York State Police and a New York State Department of Transportation Rail Safety Inspector are investigating a collision between a gas-powered golf cart and a freight train that left an Otsego County man dead.

Troopers say the golf cart driven by 57 year old Charles Turk of Boomville was attempting to go over a private agricultural rail crossing off County Route 48 in Otego at 2:54 p.m. August 9 when it was hit by the westbound Canadian Pacific freight train.

Turk was killed while his wife, 58 year old Cynthia Turk was found lying nearby with two broken legs.  She was airlifted to Albany Medical Center were she was listed in stable condition.

Authorities say the two-engine train was pulling 31 cars of mixed freight.
