An ice fishing tournament that traditionally draws thousands of participants and spectators has been delayed.

The New York State Crappie Derby, which is held on Whitney Point Lake at Dorchester Park, was scheduled for January 31.

Despite this week's cold weather, organizers say ice coverage on the lake at the end of the month would be insufficient for the event.

Last month's moderate temperatures prevented substantial ice formation. Wednesday was the first day the lake was completely covered by ice.

Based on normal ice growth, the organizers determined conditions would not be adequate to stage the derby on its original date.

Event coordinator Dave Hughes says they'll now try to hold the derby on February 14.

The first Crappie Derby was held in 1974. The inaugural event drew about 200 people. Organizers say about 3,500 people attended last year's festivities.
