The Binghamton Bearcats got off to a good start in the America East Softball Championship Tournament at the Bearcats Sports Complex this afternoon.  The Bearcats broke open a 1-1 game by scoring 6 runs on 5 hits in the 6th inning and defeating the Hartford Hawks 7-1.

Kate Price got the win in relief of starter Demi Laney who gave up the Hawks only run.  Freshman Griffin McIver from Union-Endciott High School plated the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit single and that proved to be the difference as the Bearcats tacked on an additional 5 runs to seal the deal.

Earlier in the afternoon the regular season champion Albany Great Danes shutout  Stony Brook 4-0.  Great Danes ace Brittany MacFawn recorded her 27th win of the season tying an Albany and  America East record for most wins in a season by a pitcher.

That sets the stage for a showdown between  top-seed Albany and the second seed Binghamton tomorrow morning at 11 AM at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Last weekend Albany took two out of three from Binghamton  to clinch the regular season title.  Following tomorrow's  re-match Hartford and Stony Brook meet in an elimination game with the team that loses heading home.  The Championship Tournament is a double-elimination event .
