Broome County Sheriff’s officials say speed and alcohol appear to have been a factor in a deadly crash at around 5:18 p.m. May 31on Route 26 near Roberts Road in the Town of Maine.

Authorities say a motorcyclist came on the scene of a car crashed into an electric pole and called 911.

Emergency responders had to cut Robert Norris of Endicott and Penny Barton of Maine out of the car.

Norris was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital while Barton was admitted with life-threatening injuries.

New York State Electric and Gas officials say the crash interrupted electric service to around 8 customers for several hours until NYSEG crews could replace the pole and restore power.

The crash also totally closed a portion of Route 26 through the evening as the NYSEG crews worked and law enforcement conducted accident reconstruction operations.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.
