Officer Lee Barta Remembered

It’s been 21 years since a Binghamton Police Officer was killed while trying to take a work release absconder into custody.

Lee Barta was shot to death in 1995 by the suspect, who was hiding in the closet of a home where he fled.  The suspect committed suicide after shooting officer Barta.

Barta’s son, Daniel has since joined the City of Binghamton Police force and a community center on the Northside in the neighborhood where Lee Barta lost his life has been set up and bears his name.
