After years of trying to land the NYSPHSAA  (New York State High School Public High School Athletic Association) Boys Basketball Championships in Broome County, word has come they are on the way.

The decision to move the event from the Glens Falls Civic Center to the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena beginning in 2017 came December 18.  The agreement makes that site the home of the State event thru 2019.

The championships have been held in Glens Falls for 35 consecutive years and this year marks year number 36.

The championships will draw the top four teams in each classification in the NYSPHSAA tournament.  Along with several hundred participants will be accompanying coaches, staff, parents and fans.

The economic impact for the area is expected to be substantial with hotels and restaurants expected to receive a large boost.

Word also came from the NYSPHSAA that Union-Endicott will act as the host school for the 2017 state track and field championships.  These will be held at Ty Cobb Stadium.

The December 18 announcements means that Broome County continues to be at the forefront of state championship events.  The NYSPHSAA has held New York's high school baseball tournament at five different venues in Broome County for the past decade.
