New York State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton is due in Federal Court in White Plains July 13 for the start of his trial for allegedly lying to the FBI.

Libous appeared July 7 for his final pre-trial hearing and jury selection is set to begin Monday.

Libous is accused of making false statements to Federal Investigators about his alleged involvement in using his political influence to get his son a job with a downstate law firm.

One of the issues that was not totally resolved during pre-trial discussions concerns Libous’ health.  The Prosecution does not want any discussion of the Republican Senator’s cancer, maintaining it is irrelevant and would only be a tool to leverage sympathy among the jurors.  The Defense says they may need to explain that some of the treatments could affect Libous’ ability to recall some events.

Libous has maintained his innocence since the beginning.

The trial is expected to last up to two weeks.
