New York State funding has been secured to help develop a plaza that will bring a grocery store back to the North Side of Binghamton.

$150,000 has been secured by State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton for the project at the former Big Lots Plaza on State Street.

Syracuse developer Jim Mailloux and architect Jim Kilcy of Binghamton have been working for almost a year on a four million dollar plan to make structural repairs to the Big Lots space and other retail space in the plaza that is to be called the Grocery City Market.

City officials say he hopes work on the 10,000 square foot food store in the plaza can begin within the next couple of months.

The North side neighborhood has not had a full-service grocery store for over a decade.
