Several people have been arrested following a Johnson City police investigation into a burglary and theft of thousands of dollars worth of copper.

Detectives on Monday received a report from a village business that a large amount of copper had been stolen.

Investigators learned the material had been brought to local scrap yards. During a search of an Endicott Avenue residence, police found "numerous items" believed to have been taken.

Authorities say nine Johnson City residents have been charged in the case.

One of the suspects, 39-year-old Christopher Crawford, was charged with possession of stolen property and a probation violation. He also was charged with resisting arrest after he allegedly fled when officers tried to take him into custody on Binghamton's West Side.

Five people, including a 16-year-old boy, were charged with third-degree burglary, a felony. Three additional suspects were charged with possession of stolen property.

Police say more arrests are possible. People with information regarding copper thefts in Johnson City may contact village police at 607.729.9321.
