Firefighters in Newark Valley can expect to be equipped with improved self-contained breathing apparatus as a result of funding from the federal government.

Federal officials say the Newark Valley Fire District has been awarded more than $119,000 under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

The program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Newark Valley fire district commissioner Ken Schneider said the current emergency breathing equipment is sixteen years old. The old devices will be replaced with lighter units.
