Officials with the New York State Parks Department say attendance at state-owned campgrounds could set a record.

State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey says even before the popular fall foliage season, campground attendance is up about 5.2% ahead of last year.

Through August 17, overnight campground reservations clocked in at more than 562,000.  The total for all of the 2014 season was 594,441.

The Parks Department says reservations are still available from one to up to nine months in advance by phone or online.
