The Binghamton City School District, Maine Endwell Central Schools, Owego Apalachin, Walton, Spencer Van Etten and Richfield Springs are all among New York school districts facing degrees of fiscal stress according to a new report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office.

Officials in the districts say the report shines a light on their challenges and heightens public awareness.

The Maine Endwell and Walton schools were said to be dealing with moderate stress while the other Southern Tier schools were said to be susceptible to fiscal stress.

DiNapoli’s report said districts in fiscal stress were operating with “dangerously low or non-existent fund balances, chronic operating deficits and extremely limited cash on-hand.”

87 districts state-wide were listed in fiscal stress and the report said the highest percentage of those districts were in Central New York, the North Country and Western New York.
