A new student housing facility on the Binghamton University campus is open, just in time for the start of the fall semester.

Officials have celebrated the opening of the new East Campus Housing Project that adds 900 beds to the Vestal campus housing stock.

Construction began in 2008 and cost about $375 million.

The complex, containing the Dickinson Community and Newing College Residential Community, also houses a collegiate center where classes will be held.

University officials say millions of dollars went into the local economy with the work on the development over the past decade.

The cost of the construction is expected to be made up with student housing fees over the next few years.
