A new nonprofit group is encouraging Broome County residents to make more purchases close to home.

The Binghamton Regional Sustainability coalition has launched “Be Local Broome” to promote locally owned, independent businesses and help foster a sustainable local economy.

20 businesses and organizations have committed to the program as founding members but additional members are being accepted. Contact director Winter Clark at (607) 873-9220, extension 4.

The initiative is using the Be Local Broome website as a program and provides marketing tools to local business owners while educating the public on why buying local is important.
