New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says as much as $500 million could go to communities struggling to recover from recent flooding and to prepare for possible future events.

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is expected to be available state-wide, but especially targeted to areas that were heavily damaged by Tropical Storm Lee, Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy.

The governor's office is advising government officials and non-profit agencies to start developing proposal letters if they may want to take part in the program.
