Construction is continuing on a $7 million expansion project at the facility on Front Street in the town of Dickinson.

The work to add 48 more beds and the medical unit is expected to be finished by the third week of June.

An unused gymnasium at the jail is being converted into a housing unit.

The new medical ward is needed to comply with state regulations mandating men and women be treated in separate units.

A project manager told WNBF News the work now is about a week ahead of schedule.

After construction is complete, the new housing and medical areas will be inspected by state corrections officials who must certify it is in compliance with all requirements before it can be put into service.

The capacity of the 20-year-old jail will increase to 603 inmates after the expansion.
