Authorities have released the identities of a pickup truck driver and a New York State trooper involved in a head-on crash in Broome County.

According to state police, the truck that was heading the wrong way on Route 17 Friday (April 1) was driven by 66-year-old John Roote of Morris in Otsego County.

Morris was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened around 1 p.m. just east of Exit 76 in the Town of Kirkwood.

Investigators said an autopsy was conducted on Sunday at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Dr. James Terzian, a forensic pathologist, ruled death was the result of multiple internal injuries.

Police say the results of toxicological tests are pending.

The trooper who was driving the state police sport utility vehicle in the collision was identified as 55-year-old Zone Sergeant Steven Meyer. He has worked for the New York State Police for more than 33 years. He is based at the Kirkwood station.

Meyer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Police say the crash happened as the pickup truck was headed west in the highway's eastbound lanes. It occurred moments after a caller had contacted Broome County's 911 Center to report the wrong-way vehicle.
