A western Broome County resident was surprised by something he spotted growing in a planter on his back deck.

The town of Union man said he's been growing things for years but he'd never seen anything quite like what popped up in the planter.

The things sprang up shortly after he cleaned out some basil from the planter. He said there had been "a good amount of rain the day before" he noticed the mysterious growth.

After making some inquiries, he tracked down someone who was able to identify the stuff.

Casey Kuhlman, the nursery manager at Tioga Gardens, said it was something known as "bird's nest" fungus which often grow on mulch.

Kuhlman said this particular fungus isn't seen in this region very often. But there have been several other types spotted around here in recent weeks. He said he's received quite a few calls from people puzzled by some of the things they've seen growing in the aftermath of the recent stretch of warm, wet weather.

These sometimes are called "splash cups" or "eggs in the nest." (Photo: Provided to WNBF News)
