A new law expansion, championed by the Southern Tier’s representatives to Albany, is in effect.

Garbage trucks are now added to New York State's “Move Over Law.”

The measure that was sponsored by Assembly Members Clifford Crouch, Chris Friend and Donna Lupardo and Senator Fred Akshar requires drivers to move over a lane, if possible, for stopped garbage trucks, slow down and give workers as much room as possible.

The expansion to the “Move Over Law” follows the death of a Taylor Garbage worker in 2015.

Sean Tilghman was hit by a car and killed while emptying a trash can on the side of the road.

Shortly after his death, Taylor Garbage Services and Bert Adams Disposal approached local officials to urge their support for the bill, which had been previously passed by the New York State Senate but had stalled in the Assembly.

Following those meetings, the proposal worked its way out of committee and was unanimously passed by the Assembly.
