New York State has the fifth-highest rate of motorcycle thefts and the rate is going up.

A report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau for the period of 2014 through 2015 shows the theft of bikes nationwide went up 6%.

The New York State Insurance Association reports motorcycle thefts in the state increased from 1,544 to 1,902 or 23% over the year.

Not surprisingly, the states with the most registered motorcycles, California, Florida and Texas had the most bike thefts.

Officials say thefts are weather-related with the fewest in February growing to the most in August.
