Work is literally "ramping up" in the Prospect Mountain project effecting travel on Route 17 and Route 81 in Binghamton.  Beginning this Wednesday additional restrictions will be in place.

Jack Williams, Regional Director of Region 9 of the New York State Department of Transportation, outlined major portions of the project earlier today.  Westbound traffic on Route 17 will be reconfigured to the Eastbound side of the highway.  This will facilitate new bridge construction over Prospect Street and Mygatt Street. Crews will be setting beams and pouring the concrete deck for those bridges.

Also on Wednesday two lanes of Interstate 81 Southbound will be closed at exit four.  Traffic will be directed to follow a signed detour around the project.  Exits 4N and 4S will be closed to Route 81 southbound traffic. This will accommodate construction on the I-81 overlap over Chenango Street.

Williams says safety is the key goal  throughout the project and that signage and media notifications will be utilized to the fullest to provide motorists with up to date travel information .
