Another round of layoffs at IBM locations around the United States is underway.

Officials at IBM headquarters in Westchester County won't discuss how many workers are losing their jobs but reports suggest that the number will be at least several thousand.

The company - which was founded in Endicott more than a century ago - no longer releases employment figures for specific sites. Although some people still are attached to the Broome County location, no one appears able to estimate how many workers actually report to Endicott.

IBM had more than 14,000 employees at several locations in Broome and Tioga counties in the early 1980s.

A contributor to the Forbes website described the impending job cuts at IBM as a "bloodbath." The writer suggested one-quarter of Big Blue's employees could expect bad news as part of the "biggest reorganization" in the company's history.

IBM's official line on that report was that it was "ridiculous." But the company still refused to provide specific information about upcoming layoffs.

Alliance at IBM is reporting on its website that it's been told job cuts are happening at IBM sites in New York state, including in Poughkeepsie and Rochester. The employee organization also indicated layoffs had been reported in North Carolina, Colorado and Missouri.
