Cold weather increases the risk of fires in the region.

Officials say the fire that destroyed a home on Farm to Market Road in the Town of Union at around 5 p.m. January 3 appears to have been the result of a faulty installation of a wood stove.

Meanwhile, Chenango County Emergency Services officials say an apartment house on North Canal Street in Greene was damaged and a home on County Road 18 in Preston was destroyed by fire January 4.

Firefighters from Brisban, Coventry and Smithfield responded to the Greene fire at 6:44 p.m. and left the scene and left almost four hours later.  Officials say the building was saved.

The Preston house fire drew firefighters from Preston, McDonough, Norwich, Plymouth, Oxford and Pharsalia at 2:34 p.m. and crews were finally leaving the scene almost eight hours later.

There were no injuries reported.

Both fires are under investigation.
