Teachers in the Montrose Area School District are still not in the classroom and students have another day off as a teacher’s strike continues.

Teachers represented by the Montrose Education Association picked up rakes and shovels instead of pens and pencils and did community service work at a park on March 29, the first day of the strike over salary and working conditions.  No talks are scheduled between the district and the MEA.

Representatives with the MEA say they have proposed to pay more of the health benefit costs if money saved could go toward teacher salaries.  The district made a counter-offer to the teachers’ proposal but the district says it has not gotten a response.

Meanwhile, any school days missed beyond the built-in snow and other special days will have to be made up at the end of the year.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education can move to say the strike is over at any time.
