Projects like road work in Steuben and Schuyler Counties are about to get more expensive now that a Western Southern Tier minimum security, boot-camp-style prison is empty.

The Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility west of Painted Post officially closed for good over the weekend due to state budget cuts.

Southern tier residents and local lawmakers had sought to keep the facility open, saying the facility provided valuable labor for public projects and employed dozens of area residents.

The Towns of Hornby and  Orange are expecting to have to pay around $70,000 for contractors to take up the workload slack left by the closure.
