The federal government won't pull the plug on five Southern Tier stream gages that had been targeted to be shut down later this year.

Congressman Richard Hanna says the U.S. Geological Survey has identified long-term funding for the gages, which could have been taken out of service after October 1.

Susquehanna River stream gages at Binghamton, Windsor, Owego and Bainbridge will remain operational. The Owego Creek stream gage in Owego also will be kept in service.

Hanna says the stream gages play an important role in flood preparedness across the region.

Much of the additional funding was included in an omnibus appropriations bill. Additional support will be provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
