Vestal school officials say visible mold was found on surfaces in two district buildings.

A news release issued Thursday indicated mold was discovered at Glenwood Elementary School on Jones Road and at Tioga Hills Elementary School on Glann Road in Apalachin.

The mold was reported to have been found on area rugs, cardboard and cloth materials.

The Vestal Central School District statement said the moldy items were removed and disposed of.

According to the statement, the "affected spaces were thoroughly cleaned with an approved, environmentally friendly cleanser." Air quality tests and spore sampling were conducted by a certified industrial hygienist.

The news release said test results indicated the cleaning effort was "effective and successful."

The statement indicated staff and parents had been updated on the matter.

School district officials could not be reached Thursday afternoon to elaborate on the mold problem or when it was discovered.

The statement did not indicate whether mold issues have been reported in any other Vestal School District buildings.
