A Cortland woman is alive but injured and a man she met online is facing charges.

23 year old Jon Wesley Turner of Elmira is accused of beating 25 year old Mary Helms Bartholomew at a motel in Beatty, Nevada.

Authorities say Turner is accused of forcing Bartholomew to leave New York in August.

Detectives say Turner and Bartholomew were both reported missing around August 25 and Bartholomew’s vehicle had been found abandoned in the area of Big Bear, California.

According to police the two got into a domestic dispute in the Nevada motel with Bartholomew choked and injured with a hatchet.  She was able to break free and ran to the motel office to get help at 8:21 p.m. November 2.

Nye County Sheriff’s officials located Turner nearby and charged him with battery, strangulation, battery with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, imprisonment, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Turner was sent to the Nye County Jail on $275,000 bail.
