The man's cat had not been seen since the fast-moving fire erupted in the apartment building at 1 Mather Street early May 9.

Firefighters had searched repeatedly for the cat on the third floor of the building but were unable to find her.

But the frightened feline finally came out of hiding two days later, according to a friend of the resident. She said the cat was shaken but appeared to be unharmed physically.

Dozens of people were displaced by the fire. Residents were allowed back in the building May 12 to try to retrieve belongings.

Some people who returned to their apartments said they were able to retrieve some clothing. Many apartments sustained fire damage and all of the units had water and smoke damage.

Fire investigators were back on the scene in an effort to pinpoint the cause of the blaze.
