Some inconspicuous little boxes should be improving cellular telephone service in the City of Binghamton.

Micro cell tower units are to be installed on City property, including on top of light poles and public buildings.

The Mayor’s office says the most of the equipment fits in the palm of a hand.

The new system can support cell service in a 500 foot radius of the individual device.

Binghamtonis to receive 60% of the lease revenue from lessees secured by carriers like AT&T and Verizon with no up-front cost or investment by the City.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David says the partnership with Communication Management Associates, Incorporated of Georgia has the potential to generate income as well as to build a state-of-the-art communications system that would support more economic development.

City Council unanimously approved the plan at its business meeting.

Revenue projections are not yet available according to City Hall.
