The Millennium Pipeline that carries natural gas from the Marcellus Shale drilling operations to distribution sites throughout the Northeast could be expanding.

Millennium Pipeline Co. LLC has sent letters to municipal officials in Broome County indicating it is considering installing a 60 mile extension from the Town of Union to the Syracuse area.  The pipe currently runs along the New York/ Pennsylvania border with a portion traveling through Windsor.

In addition to the Town of Union, officials in the Towns of Nanticoke, Lisle and Maine have received letters regarding the expansion idea, which the company says is in the preliminary planning stages.

If an extension is approved, there could be additional connections to the Tennessee Pipeline in Onondaga, New York.

There are several other natural gas transmission pipelines located in the Southern Tier of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.
